Waitressing, tips & service - how important is it, really?

What do you do if you’ve had lousy service at a restaurant or cafe? More importantly perhaps, what to do if you’ve had excellent service? Is the level of tips your duty as a guest, or does the tipping system have to transform after you as a customer? Is there an option to show appreciation except cash?

I don’t regard tips as my duty, even though I to a certain part been dependent by it in my past jobs when waitressing. What I do consider my duty as a customer, is to make the waitress feel as comfortable as they make me feel. Usually I show appreciation by folding my napkin into a rose, which always (with few exceptions) puts a smile on the waitors’/waitresses’ face. It’s not difficult but appreciated as not many other guests bother to do it. With knowledge that I may have done their day better, I hope they’ll appreciate this as much as a generous tipper. I know I would.
